BCG Signs Sustainable Aviation Fuel Deal to Eliminate 100,000 Tons of CO2 Emissions
Boston Consulting Group (BCG) has entered into a five-year agreement with low carbon solutions provider World Energy for the purchase of sustainable aviation fuel certificates (SAFc) as part of BCG’s efforts to achieve its net-zero climate goals. This agreement represents BCG’s largest SAFc purchase to date and is expected to result in a reduction of 100,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions over the next five years.
World Energy, based in Boston and established in 1998, specializes in the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), clean hydrogen, advanced biofuels, and decarbonization services. The company manufactures SAF using hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids (HEFA) derived from waste fats, waste oils, and other residues. World Energy is currently investing $15 billion in new projects in locations including California, Texas, and Newfoundland, with the aim of commercializing renewable fuels and assisting companies in achieving their net-zero commitments.
BCG, which set a net-zero target for 2030, joined the Clean Skies for Tomorrow coalition led by the World Economic Forum in 2019. The company is also a founding member of the Sustainable Aviation Buyers Alliance and participates in collective procurement efforts. Through this new agreement, BCG’s investment enables the company to claim greenhouse gas reductions in climate disclosures, while the physical SAF flows to an aircraft operator. The transaction is digitally tracked and third-party verified through a Book & Claim chain of custody ledger system. David Webb, Chief Sustainability Officer at BCG, emphasized the importance of scaling new climate technologies to achieve global climate goals and expressed pride in BCG’s role in supporting the sustainable aviation fuel market.
