Coin Collection Programme

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has announced the new service schedule for the Coin Collection Programme, which will run from June 3, 2024, to August 18, 2024. The Programme, which operates through two Coin Carts, has been successful since its launch in October 2014. Over the years, the Coin Carts have conducted 1,212,000 transactions, collecting a staggering 946 million coins with a total face value of HK$1,496 million. The collected coins are re-circulated to meet public demand. The Coin Carts are strategically stationed at locations that are easily accessible to the public without causing disruptions to traffic or pedestrians. Preference is given to locations with adequate power supply facilities, such as the mobile library service locations of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, to reduce reliance on the Coin Carts’ generators and promote environmental friendliness. The HKMA takes into account feedback from district councils, the public, as well as consultations with the Transport Department and the Hong Kong Police Force in selecting service locations. The Coin Carts operate from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and each vehicle is equipped with coin counting machines and staff to assist users. The service is free of charge, and users have the option to exchange coins for banknotes or add value to stored value facilities like Octopus Cards or e-wallets. Additionally, each Coin Cart features a Community Chest donation box. The HKMA will regularly review and update the service schedule to provide advance notice to the public.
