Instant Message Alert – Phishing instant messages related to Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (Asia) Limited

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has issued a press release to alert the public about phishing instant messages reported to the HKMA. The press release was issued by Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (Asia) Limited and is available on the HKMA website. The HKMA is warning the public to be cautious of these types of messages. The HKMA reminds the public that banks will never send SMS or emails with embedded links directing customers to the bank’s website to conduct transactions. Banks also do not ask customers for sensitive personal information like login passwords or one-time passwords over the phone, email, or SMS. Anyone who has provided personal information or conducted transactions in response to these instant messages should contact the bank using the information in the press release and report the incident to the Hong Kong Police Force.
