Bogus emails, advertisement and phone calls purportedly associated with HKMA
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has recently received public inquiries regarding various fraudulent activities claiming to be associated with the HKMA. These include a fraudster posing as an HKMA staff member offering to help recover losses from fraud, a notification about an intercepted fund transfer purportedly from the HKMA’s public inquiry service, a bogus HKMA advertisement promising interest-free emergency loans, and a fraudster impersonating HKMA staff to request a fee for cancelling a supposedly activated insurance service. The HKMA emphasizes that they do not contact individual members of the public regarding personal financial matters.
The HKMA has reported these cases to the Hong Kong Police Force, and advises the public to be cautious of fraudulent websites, phishing emails, and similar scams disseminated by banks. Members of the public who suspect they have become victims of fraud should contact the Commercial and Technology Crime Hotline of the Hong Kong Police Force or use the e-Report Centre for further investigation.
