Businessman charged by ICAC for offering $50,000 bribe to PolyU SPEED lecturer over admission

A 38-year-old businessman, Kang Jie, appeared in court on November 18 after being charged by the ICAC for allegedly offering a $50,000 bribe to a senior lecturer at Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s SPEED to help secure his admission to a bachelor’s degree program. Kang had failed to pass the required English interview for the program and is accused of attempting to bribe the lecturer on November 4, 2024, to influence his admission. The lecturer rejected the offer and reported the incident to the ICAC. Kang faces a charge of offering an advantage to an agent and was granted bail, with the case adjourned until December 30 for plea. The investigation was supported by PolyU, and the ICAC emphasized its commitment to upholding integrity in the education sector.
