Man charged by ICAC gets 14 months’ jail for $150,000 fraud over SWD’s traffic accident assistance payment

An ICAC investigation uncovered that a couple defrauded the Social Welfare Department (SWD) and insurers of approximately $680,000 by falsely claiming injuries from traffic accidents. The wife, Chong Siu-fong, was sentenced to two years in prison for defrauding about $530,000, while her husband, Yeung Ping-wai, was sentenced to 14 months for defrauding the SWD of $150,000. Yeung submitted a falsified TAVA application with a fake medical certificate, resulting in improper payments. The case, prompted by a corruption complaint, revealed no medical treatment or certificates were issued as claimed. The SWD and Hospital Authority assisted the ICAC in the investigation.
