Microsoft Signs Forest Restoration Deal to Remove 3.5 Million Tons of CO2

Microsoft has signed a new agreement with nature-based climate solutions startup re.green to expand their forest restoration efforts in Brazil, aiming to remove an additional 3.5 million tons of CO2. This follows their initial agreement in May 2024, which focused on restoring 15,500 hectares of the Amazon and Atlantic forests and purchasing 3 million tons of carbon removal credits over 15 years. The new deal adds 17,500 hectares, enhancing their collaboration in three key regions and supporting biodiversity conservation and local community development. The partnership aims to restore one million hectares of degraded land, capture 15 million tons of carbon annually, and provide socio-economic benefits to local communities. This initiative is part of Microsoft’s broader goal to achieve carbon negativity by 2030 through various carbon removal strategies.
