Then principal of government-aided primary school charged by ICAC gets six months’ jail for fraud of $270,000

A former principal of a government-aided primary school, Chen Yi-hsin, was sentenced to six months in prison for fraud involving over $270,000. Charged by the ICAC, he pleaded guilty to making false representations about not receiving his salary and claiming authorization to withdraw funds for school activities. This deception led the school to issue duplicate salary payments totaling more than $150,000 and grant him an additional $120,000 for activities, which he misappropriated for personal use. Magistrate Peter Yu emphasized that Chen’s actions breached the trust placed in him as a principal, ruling out community service as an option. The ICAC highlighted the importance of integrity in the education sector and reiterated its commitment to enforcing anti-corruption measures. The investigation was prompted by a corruption complaint, and the sponsoring body of the school fully cooperated with the inquiry.
