The Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) has emphasized that asset managers frequently rely on ESG ratings and data products from third-party providers to support investment decisions and risk management. However, concerns about data quality, transparency, and conflicts of interest necessitate that asset managers exercise due diligence and ongoing assessments when engaging such providers. This includes understanding the methodologies, limitations, and purposes of ESG products. Asset managers are encouraged to reference the Hong Kong Code of Conduct for ESG Ratings and Data Products Providers (VCoC) or similar standards to meet regulatory expectations. Compliance must be proportionate to the impact of ESG products, and local management remains accountable for adherence to SFC requirements.
