Companies Registry releases statistics for first half of 2025

The Companies Registry reported that 84,293 local companies were newly registered in the first half of 2025, bringing the total number of local companies to an all-time high of 1,494,806 by the end of June. Additionally, 761 non-Hong Kong companies established a presence in Hong Kong, resulting in a total of 15,509 registered non-Hong Kong companies. Two significant amendments to the Companies Ordinance were implemented in this period: the Companies (Amendment) Ordinance 2025, allowing listed companies to hold and dispose of repurchased shares, and the Companies (Amendment) (No. 2) Ordinance 2025, introducing a re-domiciliation regime for non-Hong Kong corporations. In terms of property charges, 5,970 were registered, with 9,915 notifications of payments and releases. The Registry processed 1,678,809 documents and conducted 2,615,652 electronic searches. Furthermore, 116 limited partnership funds and 109 open-ended fund companies were newly registered, while 350 new licenses were granted to trust or company service providers and 71 to money lenders.
