Private residential flat owner charged by ICAC with bribing property agent for avoiding commission

The ICAC has charged Chan Wing-tak, a 46-year-old private flat owner, with offering a $4,500 bribe to a property agent to conceal a tenancy transaction and avoid paying agency commission. The incident occurred on August 13, 2023, when the agent was facilitating a lease for Chan’s flat in Homantin. After rejecting the bribe, the agent reported the offer to Hong Kong Property Services, which cooperated with the investigation. Chan is set to appear in Kowloon City Magistrates’ Court on November 1. The offense, under the Prevention of Bribery Ordinance, carries a maximum penalty of seven years imprisonment and a $500,000 fine.
