Notes exchange service and electronic lai-see for Chinese New Year

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) and the three note-issuing banks (HSBC, Standard Chartered, and Bank of China) announced that new and good-as-new notes for lai-see will be available for exchange from 14 to 28 January 2025. To promote sustainability, the HKMA encourages the use of electronic lai-see via payment platforms like the Faster Payment System and e-wallets. Banks will extend service hours, offer online booking from 7 January, and implement crowd management measures. The public is advised to check for existing notes at home and avoid rushing during the initial days, as banks will ensure sufficient supply throughout the period.
